Sometimes the results of a Best Practices study motivate me to dig a little deeper into an industry. A recent example is our study of the transportation industry. The top three behaviors predicting effective leadership were communication, strategic and technical. This combination made me think of a more fluid and unpredictable environment than I would have pictured for this industry.
A few minutes into a Google search, I realized that the transportation industry is actually rapidly evolving. Advances in technology (e.g., electric trucks and the potential for drone delivery), changes in how we use energy and fuel vehicles, and the need for smarter routes during a time of population shifts paint a more complex picture than I would have imagined.
We miss a lot of nuance when we give our environment a passing glance. I am fortunate to work in a role that constantly exposes me to this reality. This and so many other studies are a reminder of the value of objective research and an open mind with which to interpret the results. Even outside of research, it is worthwhile to take a step back to examine new information with objectivity and openness. Finding evidence that surprises us only expands our knowledge. Who doesn’t want that?!
